Why take this course?

Welcome to my course on "Software Development Fundamentals" using VB .Net. In this course, we will be looking at a variety of different types of programs and concepts around programming.

We'll start off with looking at Core Programming. We will download for free the Visual Studio Community edition, and use it to investigate the fundamental VB .Net statements. We'll look at decision structures such as If and Select Case, repetition such as For loops, While loops and recursion, and then we'll look at errors and find out how to handle them.

We'll then look at Object-Oriented Programming. We'll go deeper into concepts that we have already used, such as subroutines, functions and classes, and add to them using events and constructors. We'll see how you can duplicate and develop classes using inheritance, polymorphism and encapsulation.

Next up is General Software Development. We'll look at various different data structures such as arrays, stacks, queues and linked lists, and we'll also look at sorting algorithms. We'll then take a step back and look at application life cycle management, and how to interpret application specifications.

The next thing to look at is Web Applications. We'll look at web page development using HTML, Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript. We'll then investigate ASP.NET web application development, web hosting and web services.

Then we'll look at Desktop Applications. We will have been creating a lot of Console-based applications earlier in this course, but we'll add to this with Windows apps and Windows Services.

We'll finish by looking at Databases. We look at the basics of Relational Database Management Systems, look at database query methods, including the six clauses of the SELECT statement, and find out how to connect to databases from Visual Studio.

No prior knowledge is required - we'll even see how to get Visual Studio for free!

There are regular quizzes to help you remember the information, so you can be sure that you are learning.

Once you have completed this course, you will have a good introductory knowledge of Software Development.

So, without any further ado, let's have a look at how you can use Udemy interface, and then we'll have a look at the syllabus for this course.

Although the instructions were very clear it seems to me anyone that uses a computer would know this material thus far.

Only a small amount of time is spent on each subject as this is an introductory course. But this is what I needed.

This is a good course for beginners, and especially if you're taking the AS and A-Level Computer Science exam using VB.NET! The only topic not covered, is file management, but other than that, this course has really good videos which are well explained. Furthermore, if you do not 100% understand a video, you can ask a question, and have some helpful guidance quickly!! Would definetly reccomend!

Honestly. This is one of the best online courses I've done. Phillip is in a class of his own as a teacher. The course material was all fantastic and I found it easy to duplicate everything he was doing in the videos. My only disappointment is that it seem Microsoft doesn't do the 98-361 exam anymore.

It wasn't really the course I was looking for, the "using VB.Net" is a little bit misleading. The parts I could use for me where well explained, so subtracting more than a half star would be unfair.

bad experience, i've spent 1 hour trying to install Visual Studio following the instructions and the Visual Studio 2017 version used in the video is not available. I tried with 2019 and the console vb..NET core component is not available!

This course was extraordinary and very useful, regardless of the 98-361 discontinuation. I learnt the underlying concepts of OOP and SQL. The verbose VB.net and creatively selected exercise programs and variable names by Mr. Burton has provided a strong understanding of the fundamentals. It's been over a year since I finished this course, in that time I have learnt Java, Python, MySQL, etc and I lost count how many times I looked back to the notes I had made with this course. Plus, it was fun. Thank you!

This is the best instructor and experience I've had on Udemy so far. After having to return a VB course previously, it is refreshing to have an instructor that is clear, to the point, and does not unnecessarily repeat things. With Phillip's help, I now feel ready to start my own projects!

Great presentation. Enjoyed the instructor. More depth needed in certain areas, but great jumping off spot. Last time I saw anything resembling VB was in 1984. Computer math in H.S. Fast forward a few decades and I NOW need it for work. Autodesk Inventor VBA. Glad I discovered this course.

Great course, apparent that instructor is very knowledgeable. I wish there had been more examples of certain subjects such as classes and other objects, along with when, where how and why to use them, which could almost be it's own course... I hope to see more great vb courses from this instructor. Thank you.
