What you will learn

Manage Logical Volumes using LVM on Linux systems and servers.

Why take this course?

In this course on the Linux Logical Volume Manager you'll learn:

  • Exactly what LVM is and when to use it.
  • How LVM creates layers of abstraction between storage devices and file systems and how to use that to your maximum benefit.
  • The details of how to create and manage Physical Volumes, Volume Groups, and Logical Volumes.
  • How easy it is to extend file systems while keeping the existing data online and completely accessible during the entire process.
  • How to create mirrored logical volumes to protect your data against single points of failure.
  • How to migrate data from one storage device to another, without taking any downtime whatsoever.
  • And more...

This course is perfect for anyone who wants to quickly get up to speed on the Linux Logical Volume Manager.

Also, this course applies to any Linux distribution as the Linux LVM commands are the same on all Linux distros.

  • Ubuntu
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux / RHEL
  • CentOS
  • Debian
  • SUSE
  • And all others.

This course also includes a 14-page LVM Workbook that contains all the examples and commands demonstrated in the course.  You can use it as your personal LVM cheat sheet.

This course was created by Jason Cannon.  He's taught thousands of people just like you, valuable, in-demand Linux skills.  He's created many highly-rated Linux courses and even written several best-selling books on the subject, too.  In this course, he shares the most important things that allow you to quickly understand and use LVM.

/***************************************************/ A very good course on LVM, very complete. Jason is very good at teaching and makes it easy to understand. I was taking this as a refresher, but I learned some stuff I did not know as well.

Thanks quite a good course :) in my case the easiest way to execute all of the commands was to use vBox with some system like Debian and add multiple disks even smaller size (like 500M instead of 50G). With these you can easily execute all steps given in the course.

Create course. It's just the right length to get you started with creating and managing volumes. No BS.

So far so good. But I actually took this course because as system administrator you encounter problems with LVM quite often. Unfortunately not one problematic scenario was discussed. It's just the basics, but these are explained really well and in a good tempo.

Black text on a white backgound with nothing extra. Could have been useful to see examples on real world use cases or even some basic practice questions in between the different commands, they are too easy to forget without any soft or recap/practice

This was a core knowledge gap that I had in my job. Helped clear the confusions I had been having around LVM

Good course. What I'd like to see 1. if adding 5g of space to an LV I omitted the "+" thus resizing the LV to 5g. How would I fix that ? If fixing potential command line "oops" were added to this video this would be awesome. 2, the LVM commands covered have various command line options. a brief discussion of them -- why and how to use them. that'd be awesome too.

Excellent information about LVM. I would have liked some additional information about snapshot creation, it's purpose and usage regarding backups, and their deletion. Otherwise packed with great information about LVM!

Good pace, good coverage of material, maybe would've like more on working with snapshots and on LVM performance when striping.

The speaker doesn't go into as much detail as I was hoping. I was hoping to learn more details such as what mounting means, what filesystems are, and why you would use one filesystem type over another, what advantages and disadvantages of using LVM are, what partitions are, and how to place / access data in them. Its a very fast paced course, and the instructor already has a linux machine up and running, so you will have to install a virtualization software, and get a virtual linux machine set up on your own as it is not in the course. The requirements only state that you need some linux CLI experience, which is why I was hoping that things like filesystems, etc. would be explained in detail for the people who have some basic experience, but nothing crazy. The instructor knows his stuff when it comes to linux, and speaks fast, so you may want to turn down the playback speed slightly. Overall not a bad course, just not what I was hoping it would be. It seems more like a course that you will go through, and follow along, but then still wont have a solid grasp of what exactly you are doing.

Short, yet concise. Just what I needed. You will, most likely, have to view the course a few times as there is a lot of good information that can be immediately applied. I am going to create a NAS server using a RaspberryPi 4 using Ubuntu Server 20.04 on a disk drive enclosure purchased on Amazon. The reason I purchased the course is to, of course, use logical volumes and, perhaps RAID 1 as the storage strategy. I feel that I can recommend this course to those learning logical volume management for similar use.
